Think of the implications, man! What is implied in the text is that the spirit of the land is the combined energies of the land and everything on it which, due to the sheer quality and amount of life energy on the land, had gained sentience and thus became a spirit.
To control a spirit of land that is made up of the life energy of the beings that live on it is to control the very lives of those who make it up. Thus, it's more like a mass-MC than that of a single target.

I assumed it was because elves are normally identified by their ears, anyway. I wouldn't know how else to identify an elf. Unless they were short and making toys for Santa, that is.

It's not so much identifying elves, as much as it is separating them from EVERYTHING ELSE that has "elf" ears.
Elf ears, or pointed ears, are also commonly found on demon girls, for example.
So, using elf_ears tag w/o "elf" would be like using an "animal_ears" tag w/o what kind of kemonomimi it's on.

Well, then my next question is, what do we identify an elf as? Anything that has elf ears that isn't a demon, vampire, monster, genie, fairy, Vulcan, Hylian, etc., I assume?
